Vertigo can be caused by many disorders of the balance system. Most commonly, they are due to inner ear problems or the brain. The common causes of vertigo are disorders like Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, Vestibular migraine, Labyrinthitis, Vestibular neuritis, labyrinthine concussion, stroke, etc. Less commonly systemic disorders like orthostatic hypotension, sensory ataxia due to diabetes or nutritional deficiencies, drug-induced dizziness etc.could lead to dizziness.

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is one of the most common causes of vertigo. In this condition, the patient complains of spinning or dizziness on getting up from bed or turning the head to certain positions. BPPV is caused by displaced calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear. It is treated by identifying the position of the displaced crystals and repositioning them to the correct position with specific repositioning maneuvers like the Epley’s maneuver, Roll maneuver, etc.

VNG or Video-nystagmography is diagnostic test to evaluate dizzy patients with high-speed infra-red cameras to record eye movements during various oculomotor and vestibular tests. The tests allow the doctor to check the functioning of different parts of the balance system and their connections in the brain.
